Yoga Class Etiquette
Always make sure your instructor is aware of any injuries you may have, but you are responsible for your own welfare and safety, so if you don’t feel safe in a posture, just sit it out or let the instructor know.
It’s a good idea not to eat for a few hours before a yoga session as a full stomach can be quite uncomfortable and the body is sluggish while energy is being used for digestion.
It is better to not wear anti-perspirant as yoga helps release toxins through natural sweating. Ideally bathe quickly before your yoga so that you are clean, obviously the feet should be clean as you will have bare feet during yoga.
Arrive a few minutes before class so that you are not in a mad rush and if you are slightly late, come in quietly without a fuss and just join in.
Turn mobile phones off before starting as other students will be distracted by a ringing or vibrating phone.
Due to hygene reasons, you should have your own mat and they are relatively in-expensive.
A yoga class needs to be meditative so try not to chat with other students and please follow the instructor’s directions. Don’t move ahead into a pose, even if you know exactly what is coming next, this is vital for your safety.
If you have to leave early before relaxation, please leave without a fuss and be aware that the end relaxation in yoga is designed as a gap between your session and the real world. Sometimes we can be a little distracted if we haven’t taken part in the relaxation and we should be extra careful in activities like driving or crossing the road!
If you pay in advance for a block of classes or a term and you don’t turn up to a class without letting your instructor know, you will forfeit the class. Arrangements for a catch up class can only be made the day before your intended class. You are paying for your space in a class whether you take part in the class or not!
